Exercising his relationship with nature, Jörg Pietschmann (b.1963) instinctively hunts and waits for the perfect piece of wood. Working alongside a material which has a spirit of it's own he controls the temperature and humidity of his workshop and lets the raw wood naturally crack over the course of several months.
With the intention of showing the heart of the tree Jörg slowly carves the wood using homemade tools, revealing layers of the living material. Once the desired form has been carved Pietschmann , sands, oils and ebonizes the surface to give it a translucent black layer that allows the dark brown wood to shine through. Small cavities have been added to the surface by hand to create another layer of tactility.
