A perfect combination of control mixed with an understated honesty is the signature of his work.

Mats Svensson belongs to one of Sweden’s most respected and experienced contemporary potters and works with great appreciation to tradition. Strongly influenced by the Japanese language of form his work is heavily influenced by asymmetry and nature.

Made using various traditional and unconventional techniques it is the result of over 45 years of experience. Firstly, a wheel-thrown shape with thick walls is created and the wet clay is then vertically cut, leaving a simple geometrical form. Secondly the clay is traditionally thrown on the wheel and shaped by Svensson to create a deliberately imbalanced spherical shape, with the vertical lines now becoming horizontal and creating a completely unique shape and surface. Several thick layers of chun-glaze cover the piece creating a beautiful depth and fading of colors.

*The piece was hand selected from Svenssons private collection.
