An inspiration drawn from the Swedish birch forests paired with over a decade of art related studies are the foundation of this piece. Hand built using slabs of a coarse stoneware clay Peter Nylander (b.1971) slowly creates a simplistic but challenging form. Using various tools he scrapes out impurities in the clay leaving dents in the surface and then fires the piece using an electric kiln. Later he applies a layer of thick white tin-oxide glaze and fires the piece once again, this time in a traditional, hand built raku kiln. Burying the piece in sawdust directly after pulling it out of the fire covers the piece with a thick layer of ash that slips into the cavities staining them a deep matte black color. This complete restraint in form mixed with a surrendering of control in the firing process defines Nylanders work.

*The piece has an incised signature “PN” on the base.
