A perfect combination of control mixed with a curiosity for the unexpected and an understated honesty is the signature of his work.
Mats Svensson belongs to one of Sweden’s most respected and experienced contemporary potters and works with great appreciation to tradition. Strongly influenced by the Japanese language of form his work is heavily influenced by asymmetry and nature.
Taking weeks to create, this hand thrown and cut stoneware bowl is the result of over 45 years of experience and has been selected among pieces in the artists private collection. Spending long amounts of time each year in Jingdezhen (the porcelain capital of China) Svensson has become a master in traditional pottery techniques. This piece is a prime example, showing a beautifully controlled white/gray shino glaze with hints of the rust/brown clay.
*The piece has an incised signature “MS” on the base.
