Inspired by the surroundings of New York, John Born creates. With reference drawn to Cycladic pottery and the great 20th century sculptors his work has a primitive and grounding aura. Valuing the importance of a physical connection to nature and the material he slowly sculpts each piece using a stoneware clay usually used for sculpture. Being inspired by common objects there is a sense of subliminal recognition for the viewer and a clear reference to the original vessel. After leaving a career In advertising John has spent the past 5 years of his life working full time with ceramics, he describes it as a way for him to preserve who he is at the core.
“ His work revolves around the original vessel, a way for him to tie together the present with the past, the functional with the sculptural.”
Working out of Wedge Ceramics in Brooklyn, John has a BFA in sculpture and has studied ceramics at Greenwich House Pottery.
