Lucien Petit was born in 1957 and belongs to one of France’s most recognizable contemporary ceramicists mixing traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic and artistic reflection. Working out of Boisbelle, a village near the town of La Borne and renowned as a pottery center since the 13th c Petit draws inspiration from architecture and construction showing an interest with binary opposites such as form and counter-form, organic and mineral, convex and concave. Working in large and often monumental scale his expertise has been used in collaboration with a number of international artists and gave Petit the opportunity to spend almost 15 years as the assistant of legendary French Ceramicist Jacqueline Lerat. Pursuing the ancient tradition of anagama firing (wood firing) this complex sculpture is completely hand built out of a durable stoneware clay. Achieving firing temperatures of around 1350c the ash turns liquid and creates a mature, tactile and living glaze that invites interaction and dialogue between the viewer and the piece. Petits work can be found in several important collections worldwide.
