A perfect combination of control mixed with a curiosity for the unexpected and an understated honesty is the signature of his work.

Mats Svensson belongs to one of Sweden’s most respected and experienced contemporary potters and works with great appreciation to tradition. Strongly influenced by the Japanese language of form his work is heavily influenced by asymmetry and nature.

Taking over three weeks to create this wood fired ceramic sculpture is the result of over 45 years of experience. Inspired by rocks and the four seasons this piece has been hand picked out of Mats Svensson’s private collection.

Firstly, the mixed clay is cast to create a basic shape and later carved to obtain an asymmetrical yet balanced shape. The raw surface is achieved by firing the piece for four days in a Japanese Anagama kiln. Reaching temperatures of over 1300 degrees C (2370F) the ash from the pine wood covers and melts over the piece creating a living and organic surface full of depth. Being a very irregular process many of the sculptures are rejected and only a few pass his eye.
