Bo Arenander is known for fusing his fascination for the human body with his love for clay, often presenting a twist to the shape as to mimic a body in motion. After finishing studies in the mid 70’s he is educated as a large scale ceramicist and dancer/choreographer with degrees from schools in both Stockholm and New York. Arenander creates intuitively, letting his hands and eyes guide the way while he works in coexistence with the material and lets spontaneous yet balanced shapes to grow. Completely hand coiled and modelled using a coarse stoneware clay he fires his large works using electric kilns and traditional raku firing techniques. This piece has been fired using both methods. Firstly he uses tools to scrape and cut out impurities in the clay, leaving dents in the surface and then fires the piece using an electric kiln. Later he applies a layer of thick white tin-oxide glaze and fires the piece in a traditional, hand-built raku kiln. Burying the piece in sawdust directly after pulling it out of the kiln covers the piece with a thick layer of ash that slips into the cavities staining them a deep matte black color.
*The piece is signed and dated “Bo Arenander 2015”.
